My “Dream Life Work” is working for a company that has a mission that is in synch with my own. That way it doesn’t feel so much like work every day as making a difference and a contribution every day. It’s been hard to find work like that but I finally found it at Berrett-Koehler Publishers, which has a mission to create a world that works for all.
I worked in high-tech for fifteen years as a programmer but I didn’t really like I was making a contribution. In 2005, I stepped out of that safe world and started a company to service the total health needs of families and individuals. We created state-of-the-art health centers that help Americans stay in shape, eat right, keep in contact with their local doctors at low cost. All these practices lead to longer healthier lives with lower medical costs. Now I feel like I am really making a difference.
I have seen you short animated film….)—–( So I take this opportunity to share a few words.
I am a 59 year old African American. I have lived in Southwest France for over 30 years.
I work as a consultant in the area of leadership development and organizational effectiveness. My German wife and I have a 4 yr old son and a new baby due in 2wks.
I approach my work with the intention of being useful to others as they discover that relationships are the Leadership vehicle and that correlating their ability to build and maintain generative relationships with their ability to make decisions from a place of momentary stillnesss within, greatly enriches the depth of their Leadership intervention.
We fish, transmit and create during the development sessions. An unfolding release of self can come.
Several years ago , my wife helped me discover Tenerife during a post Chemo-Therapy vacation…I emerged renewed and worked with my full genius the rest of the year. Since then we return for 3wks every year at Christmas. It is always a renewing experience.
This year I will take “More Than Money” with me… Thank You Mark!
In Peace…
Simon
My dream life work is what I’m doing. Actually, I would like to build an academic Ashoka, a practice and research center that helps identify and scale social entrepreneurial efforts in areas such as clean water, education for women, affordable healthy care, and poverty. The center would develop cases and research to learn how to build and scale these ventures more effectively, and how to measure the social impact of these efforts. I would hope to have centers in dozens of countries to learn from around the world and have a systemic method for helping these different enterprises collaborate to increase impact.
Since I wrote More Than Money, and this parable (over 10 years ago), they go with me everywhere.
I keep learning from their teachings.
May the wind be at your back…

Mark,
I am writing my thesis for my MBA right now based on your principles. As an accountant by day and a yoga teacher by night, I have found your books to be like a bible to me as I work through what I really “want to do when I grow up.” Oh, yes I am 44 and don’t quite have it down yet!!
Thanks for putting the curriculum of my MBA into perspective…
Thank you, Jennifer. I’m still working on the “what I want to do, too.”
Thank you for this great parable and for making it available to everyone.
Would you have any interest in speaking at a business community event in British Columbia near Vancouver? I like to bring resources to our city and try to make a difference in our community in this way.
Call or email me if you’d like to discuss the details.
